Program Overview

STEP U.S. aims to build ties between the U.S. and recently displaced Russian academics, while supporting their adaptation to a new professional landscape by building skills to compete in a Western academic setting.

During the 2024-2025 academic year, the program will provide a series of eight online seminars led by American academics, to build new knowledge and skills about the U.S. academic ecosystem, with a focus on participation in conferences.

Those academics who attend at least six of the eight sessions and who have papers accepted for presentation at a U.S. academic conference, will be invited to submit travel grants (to cover conference registration, U.S. visa, plane ticket, accommodation, and per diem) to present papers at U.S. conferences in their specialized field during the 2025-2026 academic year.

Eligibility Requirements:

When applying for the program, an applicant:

• must be a citizen of Russia residing outside of Russia for no more than 10 years;
• must be currently or previously affiliated with a higher education or research institution;
• must have a record of academic publications (in any language);
• hasn't participated in any other U.S. government-sponsored exchanges or programs in 2025.
